{"id":9808,"date":"2023-05-14T06:00:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-14T13:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/?p=9808"},"modified":"2023-06-07T05:26:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T12:26:48","slug":"starlink-in-motion-research-and-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/2023\/05\/14\/starlink-in-motion-research-and-installation\/","title":{"rendered":"Starlink In-Motion Research and Installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Getting the correct information about this new SL In-Motion option was not as easy as it should have been.\u00a0\u00a0 I read a lot of blog posts and watched a lot of\u00a0 half baked youtube videos.\u00a0 Every one of them left out the two most critical pieces of information I needed to make sure this was feasible:\u00a0 \u00a0How large of a hole do you need to get the cable into the motorhome and any information about using a third-party router without using that low-spec SL router.<\/p>\n<p>I watched one video of an installer drilling a 1.5&#8243; hole in his roof for the cable from the Dishy.\u00a0\u00a0 He apparently didn&#8217;t know the other side of that cable was a .6&#8243; connector.\u00a0 \u00a0Slightly larger than a 1\/2&#8243; hole was all that was\u00a0 needed.\u00a0\u00a0 And this In-Motion Dishy comes with an Ethernet cable built in, which was perfect to plug into our Max Transit.<\/p>\n<p>I finally got to see what comes in the box while attending Escapade Tucson in March, and I was able to measure the cable hole size requirements with a tape measure and also look at the Ethernet cable it comes with so you can leave the obsolete SL router in the box.\u00a0\u00a0 After that I was ready to pull the trigger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9967\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS002-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS002-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS002-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS002.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>When we got home, I ordered mine thru MobileMustHave.com.\u00a0 It drop-shipped via Fedex from Winegard the next day.\u00a0 It arrived in San Diego less than a week later.\u00a0 When I got home, I unboxed it immediately as there was a hole in the box.\u00a0 I wanted to make sure everything was in good shape and all the cables I expected to be there were there!<\/p>\n<p>It all looked good.\u00a0\u00a0 I set up a table out front on the driveway and hooked <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9966\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS001-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS001-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS001-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS001.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>it up with a small travel router I&#8217;d used in the past.\u00a0 It started working within minutes and I was a happy camper!\u00a0 I figured I would let it run till it got dark out, then bring it back in the garage.\u00a0 Then I&#8217;d deploy it in the backyard in the morning for a few days to &#8220;burn in&#8221; while I got the motorhome roof ready to mount it.<\/p>\n<p>I decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9971\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS006-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS006-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS006-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS006.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>use a 12&#8243; square piece of 5962 VHB from Digikey.com.\u00a0 5962 is slightly thicker.\u00a0 That would give me 144 square inches of bond.\u00a0\u00a0 The wedge mount was a bit smaller than that size, <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9968\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS003-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS003-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS003-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS003.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>so I purchased a piece of 5150 1\/8&#8243; so I put it in its place and slowly pealed off the red cover a little at a time to make sure it stuck in the correct spot.\u00a0 I used some heavy tool steel to hold it down after I was done pushing it down for a while.\u00a0\u00a0 A few hours later I gave the wedge mount a yank and realized the roof would probably come off first before the wedge did.\u00a0 It was well bonded.\u00a0\u00a0 If I needed <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9978\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS013-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS013-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS013-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS013.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>to get that wedge off,\u00a0 I will need to cut off the bolts.<\/p>\n<p>The next <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9977\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkInstall2023MODS012.jpg 1008w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>morning I installed the Dishy on the wedge and wired it up and put the small end thru my roof access port and snaked that wire over to the cabinet I installed the POE device in that it plugs <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Spring2023MODS055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9929\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Spring2023MODS055-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Spring2023MODS055-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Spring2023MODS055-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Spring2023MODS055.jpg 756w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 113px) 100vw, 113px\" \/><\/a>into.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That POE device is plugged into an outlet that is supplied by the inverter.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a really large device that uses 80 watts of power almost all the time.\u00a0\u00a0 If you use the Dishy&#8217;s sleep mode, that cuts the power by 1\/2, to 40 watts, which isn&#8217;t really a light load for something that can be running on batteries often.<\/p>\n<p>The next part of the project was to connect the Starlink into my existing internet system, namely, making it a WAN connection on my Max Transit cellular router.\u00a0\u00a0 The most interesting part of the equation was the Starlink was providing internet access thru the Max as soon as it was connected, no configuration other than the WAN wired port was in the Priority 1 position beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>Then I started testing the SL app on the phone and noticed it would only connect using its &#8220;remote&#8221; feature.\u00a0 It wouldn&#8217;t connect as local.\u00a0\u00a0 Without the local function, some of the Dishy configuration was not accessible.<\/p>\n<p>I could find nothing about getting it to work via the Max.\u00a0 A few days of posting on the Peplink forum, I got a response from a vendor out of Texas that sent a picture of a part of the configuration that allowed my app to connect local.\u00a0\u00a0 I had to edit that WAN connection and add an address.\u00a0 Then I had to add a DNS entry:\u00a0 dishy.starlink.com = 192.168.100.1\u00a0 \u00a0 Once done, my app would connect local to the Dishy.\u00a0\u00a0 We were done!!! <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9991\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress-150x8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"8\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress-150x8.png 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress-300x16.png 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress-768x42.png 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkManagmentAddress.png 943w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 2 weeks<\/strong> into our Alaska trip we are in Glacier National Park in Canada.\u00a0 The In Motion Dishy has NOT lost connectivity yet.\u00a0\u00a0 Which was totally unexpected camping in canyons and under trees many times during this journey so far.\u00a0\u00a0 As we get further north I expect that to change as the Starlink 3rd party maps show very few satellites in those orbital planes.\u00a0\u00a0 We are camped in the Waterton Lakes Townsite Campground for the next three nights, surrounded by tall mountains, very close on three sides but the app says &#8220;no obstructions&#8221;.\u00a0 So far this very expensive piece of hardware is preforming way way better than expected.\u00a0 Here is a screenshot from Waterton Lakes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE 5 weeks<\/strong> into our Alaska trip.\u00a0\u00a0 We are outside of Watson Lake, Yukon.\u00a0 The In-Motion dishy has been a god send.\u00a0 The last 10 days we have been camping and driving the ALCAN.\u00a0 No cell service here, and no service most of the way since Dawson Creek.\u00a0 We have camped under trees and surrounded by mountains.\u00a0 Yes, some drops but phone calls were working and data was moving quickly.\u00a0 I am very glad I opted for the $2500 hardware and not the $600 option.\u00a0\u00a0 I am parked under trees as I write this update.<\/p>\n<p>This thing rocks!\u00a0 [06\/07\/2-23]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkWatertonLakes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10050\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkWatertonLakes-300x218.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkWatertonLakes-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkWatertonLakes-150x109.png 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/StarlinkWatertonLakes.png 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting the correct information about this new SL In-Motion option was not as easy as it should have been.\u00a0\u00a0 I read a lot of blog posts and watched a lot of\u00a0 half baked youtube videos.\u00a0 Every one of them left out the two most critical pieces of information I needed to make sure this was &hellip;
