Williwaw during a pretty good rain and the first thing we came upon once we turned onto the Seward Highway was road construction and lots of dirt and gravel.\u00a0\u00a0 The coach is back to incredibly dirty again.<\/p>\n<p>Something I have noticed in Alaska is the highway names will usually change numbers along the way.\u00a0\u00a0 From Anchorage down to the turnoff for Seward Highway 1 is the Seward Highway, but at that turnoff, Seward Highway 1&#8217;s name changes to the Sterling Highway and the Seward Highway continues on down to Seward on Highway No. 9.\u00a0\u00a0 If you go north from Anchorage on Highway 1, it&#8217;s called the Glenn Highway.\u00a0\u00a0 After talking to some locals about the highways here, it seems they only know the names of the highways and don&#8217;t pay attention to the numbers much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6927\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-032-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-032-150x113.jpg 150w, off and we were on the Sterling Highway, the next town we came to was Cooper Landing. \u00a0 It was a pretty little town with the Kenai River running <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6899\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-004-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>along the road.\u00a0 The water was that pretty color we had been seeing in a lot of Alaska where the glaciers feeding the river was fairly close.\u00a0 It is the glacier flour that makes it the beautiful turquoise color.<\/p>\n<p>As we passed the town, the road started getting a lot narrower and much more windy. \u00a0 And something <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6897\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-002-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>that gave me pause was the Armco (metal guard rail)\u00a0 moved in right up to the white lines on the roadway.\u00a0 Even more disturbing was that the Armco had been flattened by many, many <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6896\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-001-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>vehicles rubbing along it for incredibly long stretches in the tighter curves.\u00a0\u00a0 Driving an 8&#8242; 6&#8243; bus thru there was a bit of a white knuckle experience as there were lots of RV&#8217;s, cars and trucks coming in the other direction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6901\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-006-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-006-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-006-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-006-768x576.jpg uneventful all the way down to the Homer Elks Club.\u00a0 When we got there, the rain was still <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6904\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-009-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>coming down, so we thought it lucky to be in a motorhome instead of a trailer.\u00a0 If you are pulling a trailer, you have to go out in the rain to get to your house.\u00a0\u00a0 Not so with the motorhome as you are already in there!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6902\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-007-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-007-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-007-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-007-768x576.jpg lodge to pay for the night and have a cocktail and maybe some dinner.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, they only serve dinner on Fridays and we arrived on Saturday <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6903\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Homer-2019-008-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>,<\/a>so we asked for recommendations.\u00a0 The Homer Elks Club is in the Old Town section of Homer, so there was a lot of places within waking distance.\u00a0\u00a0 The barkeep told us about three places close by that he said were really good:\u00a0 \u00a0AJ&#8217;s, Fat Olives, and Two Sisters Bakery.\u00a0\u00a0 We opted for Fat Olives, but ended up driving there as it was raining pretty good when we got back outside.<\/p>\n<p>We would recommend it!\u00a0 \u00a0 I had a small pizza and Kathy had a seafood plate on a bed of forbidden rice.\u00a0\u00a0 I had never seen black rice before.\u00a0\u00a0 My pizza was excellent and she raved about her dinner.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning we packed up and headed down to the spit to camp for a couple of nights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We
