Nelson as I would have been shy about 10 gallons to make it all the way to Whitehorse.<\/p>\n<p>We drove north on the Klondike Highway, hoping to get a campsite at the Pelly River Crossing Campground.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a day prior to a 4-day holiday weekend for Canada, so we were keeping our fingers crossed we&#8217;d find a site there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are very few campgrounds on the Klondike Highway, especially when you want to stop halfway to Dawson,\u00a0 actually just the one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_0677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6021\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_0677-113x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_0677-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_0677-225x300.jpg pm that Thursday afternoon and it was empty, completely empty.\u00a0 We found an ideal pull-thru site and made our camp facing the Pelly River, which is a fairly wide river moving pretty quickly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 By the evening about 6 more of the sites were occupied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6023\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-001-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-001-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-001-300x225.jpg 300w, Dawson were booked for the Summer Solstice party, we were not able to reserve a spot until Saturday night; so we stayed two nights at <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6018\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-009-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>the free campground on the river!\u00a0 \u00a0There were a lot of trees, so my solar struggled (I struggled) to charge the batteries.\u00a0 I did have to run the generator a bit that first evening and less the next evening as I was able to gather a bit more sun by moving the solar suitcase quite often to keep it out of the shade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6016\" about Pelly Crossing was <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6019\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-768x576.jpg 768w, was.\u00a0 I had 4 bars of LTE on both the Cricket phones and the Google Fi hotspot.\u00a0\u00a0 There had been no service most of the way there and a lot of the way to Dawson City too.<\/p>\n<p>We walked over to the only establishment near the campground.\u00a0 It was a gas station and small general store.\u00a0 I think it might have been the post office too.\u00a0 They had quite a bit of groceries and every type of supplies you could need for such a small place and being so far from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6017\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-008-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" relaxed and watched the river slide by in silence.\u00a0\u00a0 The only thing breaking the silence <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6016\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-007-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-007-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-007-300x225.jpg 300w, went over the bridge on the Klondike Highway about a quarter mile from our campsite.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, I got to relax in between moving the solar suitcase back into the sun, that is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6019\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-150x113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/PellyCrossing-2019-010-300x225.jpg 300w, hurry to leave as we had reservations for that night in Dawson.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We left around 11 am, way after all the others (maybe 7 campers) had left the campground.<\/p>\n<p>The Klondike Hwy became a lot more rough and potholed right after we crossed the bridge.\u00a0 There were lots of orange flags marking even rougher pavement the rest of the ride that day, and I spent most of the time scanning ahead for those flags and avoiding all the pot holes in the road, often having to drive on the other side of the road for long stretches to avoid the worst parts. \u00a0 But, thankfully, there have been no gravel sections since the ride from Watson Lake to Teslin Lake last week.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived in Dawson City, to the Bonanza Gold RV Park, early in the afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0 We drove around the area and looked at all the other campgrounds.\u00a0 This one was much nicer than the rest of them.\u00a0\u00a0 The worst looking place was the campground in the middle of Dawson,\u00a0 no trees and I have never seen RV&#8217;s so close together in the dirt lot.\u00a0 \u00a0I had thought the Downtown RV park in Watson Lake was pretty tight, but now I know better.\u00a0 That place was spacious.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get me wrong, Bonanza is not large by any means, but we have some trees between us and the next RV,\u00a0 I think our slides are about 10&#8242; apart.\u00a0 \u00a0In Watson they were maybe 4&#8242; apart.\u00a0 \u00a0But the Dawson sites had maybe a foot between RVs.\u00a0 We drove by one that I wasn&#8217;t sure they could open their door to
