{"id":2371,"date":"2017-09-01T05:31:33","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T12:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/?p=2371"},"modified":"2017-09-01T05:31:33","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T12:31:33","slug":"mt-desert-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/2017\/09\/01\/mt-desert-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Mt Desert Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2397\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor020-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor020-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor020-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>For the next few days we explored the Island and Acadia National Park.\u00a0\u00a0 Once you get out of the Bar Harbor, the roads are way less crowded.\u00a0\u00a0 It seems like 98% of everyone on the Island is in Bar Harbor.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We headed out toward Bass Harbor and the Lighthouse.\u00a0\u00a0 When we found it, there was a very small parking lot and very full, but we were lucky and someone pulled out of a spot as we were nearing them.\u00a0\u00a0 Wandered down to the lighthouse for a peek. \u00a0 They don&#8217;t let you inside except one day around Labor Day weekend so we were out of luck.\u00a0 It was a very small lighthouse and kind of plain, but it appeared to still be in use.\u00a0 Most of the others aren&#8217;t used anymore from what we could tell during our visits.\u00a0\u00a0 Took some pics, talked to the docent for a bit, and heard we could walk down in front of it from the other side of the parking lot.\u00a0 We walked over there and the path was a mud bog, so we went back to the car and left.\u00a0 By then there were about 10 cars waiting to park in this small parking lot.\u00a0 Held maybe 15 cars&#8230;\u00a0 I was guessing the last guy in line would have a long wait.<\/p>\n<p>On the map was a place called Seawall and we drove in that direction.\u00a0\u00a0 The coast up here is breathtaking.\u00a0 When we arrived at Seawall, there wasn&#8217;t much there but a stone seawall and we kept going till Southwest <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor024.jpg\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2401\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor024-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor024-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor024-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>H<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">arbor came into view.\u00a0 It was another cute little village with lots of boats tethered in the harbor.\u00a0\u00a0 Not much in the way of beaches up here,\u00a0 the coastline is very rocky.\u00a0\u00a0 Must be hazardous to your boat if you lose power.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">We walked around and snapped a couple pics, then off on a drive way around an inlet toward Northeast Harbor. They are not very creative with the naming up here.\u00a0 On the way we found Sargent Road right along what the sign said was the only Fjord in the US,\u00a0 with some spectacular ships moored there, the type we saw in Monaco the day after the Gran Prix.\u00a0 Then we found the spectacular waterfront estates.\u00a0\u00a0 Kathy was in awe with all the trees and the inlets,\u00a0 nothing like what you find in San Diego at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It was another picturesque village with another cute harbor full of moored boats.\u00a0\u00a0 Something I hadn&#8217;t mentioned yet are the scads of buoys all around the shoreline. \u00a0 I am assuming they are attached to lobster pots below them, but as I had not seen anyone pulling them up,\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have any empirical data to prove that.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0\u00a0 I have not seen anything that looked like it was a commercial lobster growing area, so I am guessing all these Maine lobsters are harvested right off the rocky shore.\u00a0\u00a0 And there is a lot of shoreline here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2405\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor029-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor029-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor029-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>We then drove over to Seal Harbor and found a dock to park on, a perfect spot to walk the pups and take some more pics.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of the boats tethered here were small fishing vessels.\u00a0 Very cool.\u00a0\u00a0 When I moved to San Diego, there was a huge tuna fishing fleet and I looked into working on them, but speaking Portuguese was a requirement so I crossed that off my list.\u00a0\u00a0 Now there are almost no fishing vessels there.\u00a0\u00a0 Kind of sad.<\/p>\n<p>The following day we did Acadia National Park.\u00a0\u00a0 Checked out the Park Loop Road first thing in the morning.\u00a0 Found some really great overlooks, then we found a beach, out in the middle of nowhere among the rocks and trees.\u00a0 Truly amazing. \u00a0It was so amazing to hear waves like the ocean.\u00a0 My Cuz and family are at or traditional Beach Week in South Mission Beach, so it reminded us of it. \u00a0 Then more overlooks and <a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor035.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2407\" src=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor035-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor035-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor035-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>lunch at a place I had noticed the afternoon before.\u00a0 Then off to hike around Cadillac Mountain.\u00a0\u00a0 Not much of a mountain compared to what we spent the first couple of months on the trip around. \u00a0 \u00a0Pretty view from the top though.<\/p>\n<p>A funny thing happened in the traffic on the top o the mountain.\u00a0 Some arrogant prick cut me off so he could get a parking spot ahead of us.\u00a0\u00a0 But as karma works,\u00a0 just as he passed a parked car, its backup lights lit and I got a spot.\u00a0 I noticed a little while later he was still circling the parking lot.\u00a0\u00a0 Some things just make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cowlesmountain.com\/Travels\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/BarHarbor052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
